Hayward leads 16's to victory – 19/03/08
Millwall U16s continued their late-season form with an impressive 33-0 victory over Stanford le hope at Victoria Park on Sunday.
Centre Billy Grey was again the star with a personal tally of 16 points on the back of two tries and three conversions.
With Millwall Park out of action due to the London Marathon, Millwall moved the match to Victoria Park and the shift had no affect on the home team, scoring in the first 5 minutes through Prop David Hayward.
Hayward's front row partner Ashfaq Uddin crossed next as the lions' forwards set about laying a solid platform for their speedy backs. Grey converted for a 14-0 half time lead.
Millwall backline stars Grey and Jack Rowland finally got hold of the ball in the second half and ran rough shot over their tired opponents. First it was Rowland who made a break and offloaded to Grey to score, and then it was Grey busting through a tackle, grabbing his second double in as many weeks to send Millwall towards a 28-0 white wash of Stanford.
With time running out, Stanford pushed the ball wide inside their 22 in an attempt to spread the Millwall defence. The home side was having none of it, forcing a turn over almost immediately. Prop Hayward barged over for his second try, taking three defenders with him and closing the match at 33-0.
Coach Chris Davis was all smiles after the match: "that performance was as good a show as I've seen all season.
"Our boys were clinical in their execution and I thought they stuck to the game play perfectly."
David Hayward was awarded man of the match on the back of his two tries and overall leadership around the park and the coach praised his star prop:
"David has so much potential, sometimes we hold back giving him the nod as top player because he is capable of brilliance but doesn't always show it"
"Today he showed just how good he is and can be, so we had no qualms about naming him man of the match"
Ends.
