Millwall RFC FAQs

As a new page on the website, we are not sure what questions you would like to see answered here. If you have any suggestions, contact the webmaster.

If you are new to Millwall Rugby Club, or are thinking of joining and just want to know what its all about, this is the page for you!

In the beginning....

Millwall Albion RUFC was formed in 1995 after watching the World Cup rugby on the TV. From humble beginnings (borrowed shirts etc) the club has gone from strength to strength. There is a very successful adult first team (having gained 4 promotions in 7 seasons) and an adult second team (known as the Llamas) both of whom meet regularly during the season. We have occasionally fielded a 3rd adult team - something we are trying to build into a permanent feature. The first team have just won promotion having finished season 2003/04 as Champions of Eseex Division 3.

Millwall's Youth Rugby section is very new. In July 2003 fourteen of the adult members of the Club attended a course, run by the RFU, to attain their basic coaching certificate ("Level 1, Youth") to enable them to coach children under 18.

In November 2003, the Club held a very successful "Tag Rugby Tournament", generously sponsored by Canary Wharf Group for over 150 Year 6 youngsters from 6 of the local primary schools. The tournament was themed around the Rugby World Cup in Australia, with teams named after countries and pitches named after Australian cities.

In January 2004, the Club held 4 Sunday sessions to gauge the level of interest amongst local kids - and the Sunday Sessions have been running ever since!

On April 2004, the Youth Section played its first games against teams from Basildon RFC. The 9/10's won their game but the 12/13's were beaten by a more experienced Basildon side. Both games had about 200 spectators watching the games in beautiful sunshine.

In early May, the Club's association with George Green's Secondary School led to the 15/16's playing in a tournament against other schools on Millwall Park.

What comes next is up to you...

And now....

The club welcomes new players of all standards and their families.

Most Saturdays throughout the season we put out two or three adult teams. The Youth section has just started, so it is an exciting time for the club but we don't exactly know how many teams we will have yet.

Whether you're a player or just a spectator, why not give us a call!

Training.

Training during the season (for those who can make it) is usually at the Lower Paddock, Mudchute Farm, Isle of Dogs.

We occasionally use indoor and astro-turf facilities at the nearby George Green school to preserve the grass on the Lower Paddock. George Green school is on Manchester Road, a minutes walk from Island Gardens station.

So What's Next...?
The simple answer is...come down and meet the coaches and other players.

If you can one of the Sunday Training sessions, that would be great. If you're not comfortable just breezing in, contact Jamie beforehand and he can meet you and arrive with you.

Everything else can be explained when we meet you.

We have people from all over the world and - whether you are a novice or a great player - you'll be sure of a friendly welcome at Millwall Rugby Club.
